Paintball Gun Categories
Q. What is the difference between a speedball paintball gun, X Ball paintball gun, recreational paintball gun, scenario paintball gun, tactical paintball gun, sniper paintball gun, woodsball paintball gun, and other paintball gun categories that I’ve seen?
Answer:
Initially, you should know there are two general paintball game types. (This is covered under another question, which you should read first to understand why the guns have the differences explained here.)
Speedball. Since Speedball is played in a small field with colorful bunkers, the paintball guns do not need to be camouflaged like paintball games played in the woods. As a result, the guns exhibit many cool colors and designs. Like skateboards, you can get the same gun model in many different designs and colors. Regarding X Ball guns, X Ball is simply a speedball game type, and is a trademarked term owned by the NXL.
Recreational & Scenario Paintball. Recreational paintball guns, sometimes called “scenario paintball guns,” normally operate the same as speedball guns on the inside, but there are a few external differences. First, recreational paintball guns are often camouflaged or dark colors. Second, recreational paintball guns are sometimes made to look like real war guns, so they might be bigger and heavier than their speedball gun counterparts. In fact, some scenario paintball guns are the exact same gun as a speedball gun on the inside, but they have a different cover on the outside.
Types of Paintball Games
Q. What is the difference between speedball, X Ball, recreational paintball, scenario paintball, tactical paintball, sniper paintball, woodsball paintball, and other paintball game categories?
Answer:
There are two general paintball game player types: speedball and recreational paintball players.
Speedball paintball players play in a small field with bunkers. The games generally take only a few minutes because players are so close to each other. Speedball includes X Ball. X Ball is a trademarked term owned by the NXL.
Recreational paintball players are the opposite of speedball players. Recreational players play a variety of paintball games in larger areas including fields and woods. These areas form the basis for their names:
- Woodsball. Woodsball is merely paintball played in the woods.
- Scenario. Scenario paintball is played in an area that is similar to the landscape of the particular scenario that is being recreated. (The types of scenario paintball games is covered under another section.)
- Tactical & Sniper. Scenario paintball players sometimes refer to their gun types as tactical paintball (because scenario paintball focuses on tactics), or sniper paintball (for players who play the role of a sniper).
Scenario Paintball Games
Q. What types of scenarios do scenario paintball players use?
Answer:
Scenario paintball players have a huge variety of games. Some scenario players refer to capture the flag as a scenario game, but the term “scenario” is more appropriately applied to recreations of specific historic events including battles, invasions, or tactical missions.
A tactical mission might be Rescue the Hostage, where both teams must find a hostage who is waiting somewhere in the middle of the two teams, and bring the hostage to a designated safe area.
Sometimes scenarios include recreations of movies including Rambo (everyone chases one guy). For more scenario games, check out these sites: game list 1, game list 2, and game list 3.
Scenario Paintball Terminology & Lingo
Q. What does the word (insert any term here) mean for scenario paintball players?
Answer:
Scenario paintball players use a variety of words, terms, phrases, and lingo. Wikipedia has a great list of these terms and their meanings here: scenario lingo.
